Review: 2015 National Competitions Hosted by IPMS Dunedin
After an extensive and exciting build-up to this years national competition we suddenly find ourselves on the other side, with little more than memories of a fantastic weekend, and (hopefully) a few ribbons!
First and foremost we must congratulate our comrades, the IPMS Dunedin team, for hosting a superb event. The whole weekend was well planned and well executed - they had even organised the weather to behave itself, which, along with extensive pre-show advertising, ensured a good turnout of spectators!
It was really great to see so many people through the door, eager to see the tables full of excellent modelling specimens. In fact, Saturday morning got so busy and crowded the hosts may have been caught a little off-guard, sending some into a tailspin, having to play catch-up to try to get the judging of the competition initiated! But that's an OK problem to have. And although it caused delays in the proceedings somewhat, and necessitated a little "on-the-fly" thinking, credit to the guys for shining on and keeping the show chugging along so smoothly.
Credit must also go to all who participated. An unprecedented number of "out-of-towners" attended, and the standard of models was as high as the variety was broad. It was great to be able to talk with so many, share experiences and see what else is being built around the country. (-Depressing and inspiring at the same time!)
The national AGM was succinct and uneventful, with just the future events being discussed and doled out to the regional chapters, the line-up now sorted until about 2020!
A busy Saturday of networking, buying and selling, photographing, judging, and general ooh-ing and aah-ing, was topped off by a fantastic meal at one of the local establishments. Good food and drink was hotly accompanied by more "model talk", debating of our national flag, speculation about the Rugby World Cup and running commentaries of the Bathurst 1000!
Sunday saw us all return to the hubbub of the public display and the eager anticipation of the prizegiving, followed then by the not-so-eager anticipation of packing up and going home!
All-in-all a great weekend was had, and it was fantastic to see an event like this get so much support locally and from around the country. It's this kind of showcasing and spirited fun that keeps the hobby alive, and truly that's what we all want!
Over and out, and happy modelling!
