2021 Expo & South Island Champs:
OVERVIEW
WELCOME to the "all you need to know" section, where we detail the features of the 2021 Invercargill Model Expo, requirements of the modelling competitions, and the needs of the organisers. Needless to say, volunteer recruitment is a prime directive! Please read on...
The Obvious
IPMS (Invercargill Plastic Modellers Society) biennial model expo and competitions.
Date: 24th and 25th July (set up Friday 23rd)
Venue: Corinthian's Convention Centre at the Invercargill Workingmen’s Club, corner Esk & Jed Streets, upstairs, East room.
Times: 10.00am until 4.00pm both days (Friday set-up from 10.00am)
EXPO FEATURES:
2021 Model Expo and Competition Special Displays:
“Spaceships - Past, present, future” is clearly a broad, generic theme which will showcase any space-faring vehicle, real-world or science-fiction. Models, dioramas, etc of all types will be welcomed to the tables with open arms!
The Pearl Harbour display will encompass a massive range of models from many genres including aircraft, ships, military vehicles, figures, and civilian vehicles. Being the dramatic catalyst for the future events unfolding in the Pacific regions it makes sense to include subjects featured in the Pacific theatre as well as the actual attack on Pearl Harbour.
DUTIES
Over the course of the weekend there will be “stations” that need to be manned throughout, and positions of responsibility that will require the generous goodwill of most, or all, of our club members.
Setting Up
Helping hands will be required to set up tables, stands, and cordons from 10 o’clock on Friday morning (23rd July) ready to receive models. In due course a plan of the room space will be made available detailing the proposed layout. Competition and Display Only entries are to be grouped in their respective classes where possible.
Special Displays
This will require a “creative” team of no more than five people, responsible for designing, procuring props, and on the Friday (23rd) constructing the SPACESHIPS display and the PEARL HARBOUR commemorative display
The Door
This station requires a minimum of two people on hand at all times, except Saturday morning, which is traditionally the busiest time and will require three people. It is not expected that the same two or three volunteers remain at this station for the whole weekend, but preferably take shifts with a variety of teams. Door staff will be responsible for:
Modelling Demonstrations
There will be designated tables set up with cutting mats and desklamps for members to toil away on their own models at their own leisure, and perhaps chat to the viewing public. With two “stations” provided it is hoped that there will be two modellers working at any given time over the weekend. This job is more “fun” than “chore” and has great potential to allow considerable progress on one’s own projects!
Judging Teams
Under the guidance of the Head Judge it is hoped that several teams of two or three club members can be formed to take on the auspicious challenge of rating all the competition pieces. Judging is not an evil job but one that can be very enlightening for most hobbyists. Ideally there should be no less than six volunteers from our club membership to form teams, and, where those teams are concerned, the task should only take a few hours to complete.
