The Obvious
2024 IPMS NZ Model Expo & National Competition
hosted by IPMS Southland (International Plastic Modellers Society)
Date: 12 & 13 October (set up Friday 11th)
Venue: Corinthian Convention Centre at the Invercargill Workingmen’s Club, corner Esk & Jed Streets, upstairs, EAST room.
Times: 10.00am until 4.00pm both days (Friday set-up from 10.00am)
EXPO FEATURES:
2024 Model Expo and National Competition Special Displays:
D-Day Anniversary is clearly a broad theme which will showcase any subject that featured in the D-Day assault by allied forces on 6 June 1944 (a.k.a. Operation Overlord). Models, dioramas, etc. of all types and scales will be welcomed to the tables with open arms! This is a special competition class and all entries will be subject to judging for awarding a Best In Class prize.
Big Screen Small Screen is another broad generic theme and can include any subject featured in either a movie or television series (including documentaries). This includes figures, vehicles, equipment, locations etc. and as a special competition class all entries will be subject to judging for awarding a Best In Class prize.
Under Pressure is an exclusive competition class for any real-world steam powered vehicle or machine, as well as fantasy "steampunk" contraptions or related subjects (including cross-sectioned, exploded, or demonstration models) and all entries will be subject to judging for awarding a Best In Class prize.
DUTIES
Over the course of the weekend there will be “stations” that need to be manned throughout, and positions of responsibility that will require the generous goodwill of most, or all, of our club members.
Setting Up
Helping hands will be required to set up tables, stands, and cordons from 10 o’clock on Friday morning (29th Sept.) ready to receive models. In due course a plan of the room space will be made available detailing the proposed layout. Competition and Display Only entries are to be grouped in their respective classes where possible.
Special Displays
This will require a “creative” team of no more than five people, responsible for designing, procuring props, and on the Friday (11th) constructing the BIG SCREEN SMALL SCREEN display, the D-Day Anniversary display, and the POWER OF STEAM display. This team will also be responsible for coordinating and guiding model entries to their appropriate destination.
The Door
This station requires a minimum of two people on hand at all times, except Saturday morning, which is traditionally the busiest time and may require three people. It is not expected that the same two or three volunteers remain at this station for the whole weekend, but preferably take shifts with a variety of club members. Door staff will be responsible for:
Modelling Demonstrations
There will be designated tables set up with cutting mats and desk lamps for members to toil away on their own models at their own leisure, and perhaps chat to the viewing public. With two “stations” provided it is hoped that there will be two modellers working at any given time over the weekend. This job is more “fun” than “chore” and has great potential to allow considerable progress on one’s own projects!
Judging Teams
Under the guidance of the Head Judge it is hoped that several teams of two or three club members can be formed to take on the auspicious challenge of rating all the competition pieces. Judging is not an evil job but one that can be very enlightening for most hobbyists. Ideally there should be no less than six volunteers from our club membership to form teams, and, where those teams are concerned, the task should only take a few hours to complete.

2024 IPMS NATIONAL COMPETITION
The members of IPMS Southland are proud to invited to host this year's National Competition and we are working hard to make this event not only special, but also as relaxing and hassle-free as possible for all entrants. We are also (tentatively) excited to inaugurate the newly established National Competition Guidelines, a document forged over the past months with input from all NZ IPMS chapters, and which outlines a robust and comprehensive standard for all national competitions going forward.
Entry Forms
To spare yourself any hassle on the day, you can now download and print off your own entry forms and fill them out at your leisure. Remember, you will need one form per entry (piece), and then bring them with you to the venue at set-up time either Friday (23rd July) or Saturday morning (24th July).
